About Michael Shaffran

michael-shaffran-photoMichael Shaffran is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist with over 30 years experience in the mental health profession. He's worked most of his time in outpatient Psychiatric clinics where he has provided individual, couples/marital, family and group therapy. He is trained in multiple therapies, including: Psycho-dynamic, Gestalt, Structural-Strategic Family, Solution focused, Brief Therapy, and other methods. He is trained in EMDR ( a type of therapy for PTSD), hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery also. Mike is committed to ongoing seminars, workshops and trainings to keep current with the latest therapy to provide the best services possible to his clients.

Michael specializes in treating men who are healing major emotional wounds and losses from childhood: emotional, physical and sexual abuse, in many cases. Often, these men had poor or no role models and were neglected and never taught what it means to be a man. This has led to failed relationships or marriages and poor interpersonal relations with friends, family and employers. A number of these men have turned to various addictions: alcohol, drugs, food, sex (including pornography and affairs) and gambling. Along with support from 12 step programs, Mike helps his male clients heal their old wounds and transform their lives for the better.

Michael also speaks Spanish and has a thorough knowledge of Latino and Hispanic cultures. He was fortunate to attend the University of New Mexico for 2 years during the late 60's. This has fueled his love of Latino and Native American cultures. He's traveled to Mexico and throughout the Caribbean as well. As a young man, he had the good fortune to sail in the Merchant Marines where he learned first hand about the rich cultures south of the border. Moreover, he also sailed to Europe several Summers; so, he has knowledge of European cultures too. Furthermore, he added to his multi-cultural knowledge base by teaching English as A Second Language(ESL) in Korea from 1996-97. He enjoyed the people and culture and traveled throughout Korea, Thailand, Philippines and Taiwan.

Finally, he capped off this adventure with a Trans-Siberian railway trip that covered 5600 miles. He stopped in Irkutsk, Siberia to discover his roots, which was where his Great Grandfather and Grandfather came from. This was a very emotional trip for him and he learned alot about himself and his cultural background. This experience has benefited him professionally as well in working with diverse cultures.

Another salient point about Michael is that he loves to learn and he's read widely: mainly therapy books but recently novels and books about politics and economics and multi-culturalism. This love of knowledge has helped broaden his horizons sociologically and psychologically so that he has a wider grasp of issues that clients and patients bring to the therapy setting. This understanding of human behavior makes him not only a better Therapist but also a better human being.
